Visiting the infamous bone chapel on Halloween – a photo essay

When I was in Prague during my solo European venture, I found myself with the opportunity to visit the Sedlec Ossuary – or otherwise known as the Bone Chapel – on Halloween, out of all the days of the year!

The Roman Catholic chapel is a designated World Heritage Site and is located in Kutná Hora, approximately an hour outside of Prague in the Czech Republic.

A very creepy photo – one of my faves!

The entire chapel is estimated to contain skeletons of at least 40,000 people!

While you might leave feeling a little grotesque and wanting to skip lunch, the Sedlec Ossuary serves as a great day trip from Prague.  While you’re in Kutná Hora, check off another UNESCO World Heritage Site from your list and visit the Cathedral of St. Barbara – a magnificent, famous Gothic church that dates back to the 1300s. You can opt to purchase a ticket that will cover both entrances to save money (just don’t lose your ticket).

Hostels in Prague will offer a complete day trip to see the Bone Chapel but you can do it for half the price if you go on your own. Take the local train from Prague to Kutná Hora and visit the information office to get maps and extra info (they speak English!).  Get around town by using the bus service. It’s very inexpensive and if you find yourself lost, rest assure you will spot a tourist that’s probably going to same places you are!
